Football Controversy

Sports has never been free to controversy. This is especially true with football. However, football might be having its most controversial year, ever. And it all has to do with kneeling or standing during the National Anthem.

The most high-profile supporter of kneeling during the anthem was Colin Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback. He is the face of leadership when it comes to kneeling. The players themselves are either for or against this measure. But whichever side they support, the great thing is that the players remain a team during the game.

Fans are also divided. Some support kneeling during the Anthem. Other prefer to support the traditional method, which is standing. No matter which side one is on we can all agree that this year, because of this, has been very controversial.

Multiple news cycles have followed the progress of this current controversy. Many people have weighed in, either for or against. Even the President of the US, Donald Trump, has at many times talked about this controversy. He has tweeted multiple times as well. Trump, perhaps as part of his current profession, has supported the traditional way of standing during the Anthem.

What’s all the fuss about? For those who kneel, there are many reasons for it. One of the main reason for kneeling is to silently protest perceived widespread police brutality against minorities. Others have said the protests stand for racial injustice and everything that comes along with that.

No matter what side one supports, I believe both sides can agree that it distracts from the game. Most people watch football to watch football. That being said, it is everyone’s right in this country to protest peacefully as they see fit. Protesting is not new in this country. Protests will also happen in the future. As long as a protest is peaceful, it continues to be one of the rights all can enjoy.
