America’s New Pastime

When someone hears “America’s Pastime” they normally think about baseball. This may have changed over time. Football might be considered the new pastime.

Sure, in decades past, baseball was considered the pastime. What is more American than cars, baseball, and apple pie? When I was a kid, I played tee-ball. Baseball played a part in my childhood, therefore.

Baseball played a large role in entertainment as well. It still does. But I feel that the sport is rather vintage. Who can forget The Sandlot? What about Angels in the Outfield? These movies are classics. But we haven’t gotten a baseball movie like this in a long time. Instead, football seems to be more popular these days.

TV rating proves this. The Super Bowl is more popular than the World Series. The Super Bowl is the championship game of football. The World Series is the championship game of baseball. More people watch the Superbowl than the World Series. It’s been this way for a long time. Given this hard fact, it shouldn’t controversial, then, to say the football is America’s new pastime.

Football movies in the past decade also seem more popular and common. Friday Night Lights, The Blind Side, and The Longest Yard come to mind. What about The Waterboy? Hollywood can even make successful comedies surrounding football. I actually really liked that movie. Remember the Titans and Varsity Blues are also among the heavy hitters when it comes to football movies. The only popular baseball movie in recent times, that I can think of, is Moneyball, with Brad Pitt. I didn’t even see that movie, but it looks good.

Given these facts, I think it’s safe to say that America’s new pastime is football. That’s not a bad thing, either. I love watching football on TV. It’s a faster game than baseball. Since we’re mid-season, enjoy a game this week!

Football Controversy

Sports has never been free to controversy. This is especially true with football. However, football might be having its most controversial year, ever. And it all has to do with kneeling or standing during the National Anthem.

The most high-profile supporter of kneeling during the anthem was Colin Kaepernick, the former 49ers quarterback. He is the face of leadership when it comes to kneeling. The players themselves are either for or against this measure. But whichever side they support, the great thing is that the players remain a team during the game.

Fans are also divided. Some support kneeling during the Anthem. Other prefer to support the traditional method, which is standing. No matter which side one is on we can all agree that this year, because of this, has been very controversial.

Multiple news cycles have followed the progress of this current controversy. Many people have weighed in, either for or against. Even the President of the US, Donald Trump, has at many times talked about this controversy. He has tweeted multiple times as well. Trump, perhaps as part of his current profession, has supported the traditional way of standing during the Anthem.

What’s all the fuss about? For those who kneel, there are many reasons for it. One of the main reason for kneeling is to silently protest perceived widespread police brutality against minorities. Others have said the protests stand for racial injustice and everything that comes along with that.

No matter what side one supports, I believe both sides can agree that it distracts from the game. Most people watch football to watch football. That being said, it is everyone’s right in this country to protest peacefully as they see fit. Protesting is not new in this country. Protests will also happen in the future. As long as a protest is peaceful, it continues to be one of the rights all can enjoy.
